Retaking Lost Status?

Once known as the “breadbasket of Europe”, the new Ukrainian government sounds ambitious intentions to take back this status for the country. Indeed, this is very promising for a number of reasons. First, the country has the largest area of agricultural land in Europe. Second, a moderate climate and fertile soil ensure remarkable competitive advantages for agrarian producers. Domestic agrarians grew up and expanded into big publicly-listed agriholdings. Almost every business conference is sweetened with success stories of Ukrainian agrarians accessing EU markets. A series of global industry giants have been here for decades and have grown significantly. And ever changing episodes of disappointment do not prevent investors from looking for opportunities in the country.

All these factors inspired us to have a substantial and insightful conversation with Oksana Kryzhanivska, partner at Alexandrov & Partners. It revealed that reforms of the sector require a specific approach and impact assessment considerations. These things may sound obvious, but they are still ignored in the main in the real policy-making process.

And by way of tradition, we report on the summer’s refreshing event for the legal community — 10th ECA (Europe — Caucasus — Asia) Legal Forum hosted in Tbilisi and Intellectual Property Venue held in Kiev.
